Breeding Soundness of the Mare
Puget Sound Equine Reproductive Center (PSERC) staff provides examinations to determine a mare’s ability to conceive, safely carry a fetus to term, and successfully deliver a live, healthy foal. The exam includes a history of previous health problems, any previous reproductive history, and a full general physical exam to determine her current health, especially related to her status as a brood mare. If determined necessary, blood and fecal tests will be performed. Special attention will be given to the reproductive organs.
The mare’s reproductive tract will be examined by speculum exam, ultrasound, and manual palpation. A culture, cytology and biopsy may be performed if indicated. These results will be discussed with the owner and a breeding or treatment plan established.
