Bark in the Park, July 18, 2007
The Class A-rated Everett Aqua Sox will host their 2007 "Bark in the Park" at their home ballfield (Everett Memorial Stadium), on Wednesday evening, July 18th. Baseball fans are encouraged to bring the whole family and their canine companions out to the game. The gates will open at 6 PM so fans can stroll through dog-related booths & exhibitions prior to the first pitch at 7:05 PM. Pilchuck staff members will be there to greet you and offer free pet product samples and information when you stop by our booth. It's great family entertainment just watching the 300+ dogs that annually accompany their owners to the event. For ticket and other information, visit www.aquasox.com. Hope to see you there!

Pilchuck Surgeon Gives Shock Wave Therapy Presentation to Rocky Bay Equine's Clients, Gig Harbor, WA, September 2003
Dr. Conrad Boulton, one of Pilchuck's four board-certified equine surgeons, spoke to the clients of Rocky Bay Equine Clinic, Gig Harbor, Wa, about Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). ESWT is the emerging technology now in use at Pilchuck to treat soft tissue & bone injuries that have responded with limited success rates to conventional therapies.

Pet Expo, July 2003
Dr. Jeff Duke presented information on Pet Dental Health & gave an update on canine hip dysplasia at the two-day event in Monroe, WA.

Police K-9 Handlers Receive First-Aid Training for Their K-9 Partners, June 2003
Law enforcement officers from several local agencies, as well as officers from Canadian & Hawaiian agencies, met in Everett, WA, to receive hands-on first aid training for their K-9 partners. Topics covered by Dr. Jeff Duke, Dr. Tim John, & licensed veterinary technicians, Kari Griffith & Becki Majerle, included canine CPR, intubation, burn care, bandaging, bloat, & poisoning.

West Nile Virus Vaccination Clinic, May 3, 2003
The hospital will host its third West Nile Virus vaccination clinic for horses on Saturday, May 3, 2003, from 9 AM to 3PM. As a service to area horse owners, the vaccine was administered at a reduced cost, and no hospital visit fee or call charge added. This clinic follows two others that were held at the hospital last fall.

Equine Nutrition Seminar, March 1, 2003
Dr. Steve Duren will be presenting practical and easy to understand nutritional information for horses from foaling through retirement during this day-long Saturday seminar. He will touch on the special needs of the performance horse, broodmare, and senior, and will answer specific questions from horse owners, as well. Pilchuck equine surgeon, Dr. Conrad Boulton, will explain treatment options for horse owners who are already dealing with the consequences of "failed" nutritional programs, and Pilchuck equine dentist, Dr. Bob Gregory, will give an overview of good dentistry for your horse.
Dr. Duren, who is a native of Soda Springs, Idaho, earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences at Idaho State University, and his advanced degrees (M.S., Ph.D.) in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Duren, a former consulting equine nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research in Versailles, Kentucky, has formed his own company, Performance Horse Nutrition, LLC, and consults with feed manufacturers and horse owners throughout the world. He is co-author of the book, The Concise Guide To Nutrition In The Horse.

Santa Pictures, November 2002
Santa made his annual pre-Christmas appearance at Pilchuck, posing for pictures with clients, children, pets, & staff members on the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Cookies, coffee, and good cheer were plentiful. Santa kept everyone guessing this year was that Dr. Duke or Dr. John under the white beard and spectacles? Both? HO-HO-HO!

West Nile Virus Seminar, November 20, 2002
On Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, we presented a seminar to learn the latest about West Nile Virus (WNV) in horses from Rob Keene, DVM, one of this country’s foremost speakers on the disease. WNV carries up to a 40% equine mortality rate, and is expected to begin infecting the Washington horse population by Spring 2003, if not sooner. Dr. Keene shared the most current WNV vaccine information and answered questions regarding the disease.

Evergreen State Fair, August 2002
Once again this year, Pilchuck veterinarians and staff will provide veterinary inspections and check-ins at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, Washington.

Everett Aqua Sox "Bark in the Park", July 25 2002
Snohomish & North King County pet owners took Fido out to the ball game as the Everett Aqua Sox hosted their annual event, encouraging baseballs fans to bring their canine companions and enjoy a great evening of baseball, dog-related booths & exhibitions, games, and prizes. The 2002 event was co-sponsored by Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital, Pet Pros, and KRKO Radio. Over 2,500 fans accompanied by about 300 of man's best friend cheered the Class "A" rated Aqua Sox on against the Yakima Bears. Pilchuck's own Dr. Kevin Wilson, accompanied by his greyhound, Julian, threw out the first pitch and the game was on! Join us for the 2003 "Bark in the Park" on July 24th, 7 PM, at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The Benefits of Reashure Choline in the Transition Cow, May 2002
Dr. Jack Garrett will give a presentation on the benefits of reashure choline in transition cows.
Dr. Jack Garrett received his undergraduate degree at Colorado State University in Animal Science, and his PhD in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota. Upon completion of his doctorate, he took a 2-year assignment in Morocco, North Africa, with the University of Minnesotas College of International Ag Programs, where he taught ruminant nutrition courses and conducted research in dairy and beef production. For the 11 years following his return, he held a research and technical service position with Diamond V Mills, where he researched yeast culture in all livestock species and developed the Diamond V/Kirkwood Research Center. Most recently, he was Director of Animal Nutrition for Omega Tech, Inc., where he worked on enriching dairy and meat products with omega-3 fatty acids as well as animal health products utilizing these fatty acids. Dr. Garrett has recently joined Balchem Corporation, and will serve as the Technical Service Specialist Dairy, for North America.

Mark Kirkpatrick, DVM is a graduate of Iowa State University. After eight years in dairy practice, he returned to Iowa State for a masters degree in Johne's Disease. Two years ago, he joined Pharmacia Upjohn as a technical services veterinarian. Dr. Kirkpatrick is the author of several publications on hemorrhagic bowel syndrome in dairy cattle.

Behavior Seminar for Horses, January 2002
Dr. Sue McDonnell spoke to 200 people who turned out in Woodinville on a stormy Thursday night to learn more about equine behavior. She addressed topics ranging from how do horses think; creating the user friendly horse; intensive early handling in foals; to behavior modification for overcoming non-compliant behavior such as injection shyness; and how to evaluate if a problem is psychogenic or physiologic.
Dr. Sue McDonnell, a native of Pennsylvania, holds a 1982 masters degree in Psychology from West Chester University and a 1985 Ph.D. in Reproductive Physiology and Behavior from the University of Delaware. She completed post-doctoral study in clinical veterinary reproduction at the University of Pennsylvanias New Bolton Center in 1987 and became board certified in Applied Animal Behavior in 1991. She is the founding head of the Equine Behavior Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where her work includes clinical, research, and teaching activities focused on horse behavior and welfare. Sports Medicine Seminar with Jack Snyder, DVM, March 2001
Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital presented an all-day Sports Medicine Seminar with Jack Snyder, DVM in Woodinville, Washington. Seminar topics included Managing Lameness in the Performance Horse; Alternative Therapies; Lameness Evaluations; Experiences of the Olympic Veterinary Team in Sydney.
Dr. Snyder is Chief of Equine Surgery and Lameness at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California at Davis. He served as the Chief of the Equestrian Medical Team for the Olympic Games in 1988, 1996, and 2000. He also was Consulting Veterinarian at the 1998 World Equestrian Games, and Head Surgeon at the 1991 and 1995 Pan American Games. Dr. Snyder earned his DVM at Washington State University, and his Doctorate in Comparative Pathology from UC Davis. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Breeding Seminar with Lisa Metcalf, DVM, February 2001
Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital and Puget Sound Equine Reproduction Center were pleased to present an evening seminar with Lisa Metcalf, DVM. Dr. Metcalf spoke on Strategies for Success with Advanced Breeding Technologies: Cooled/Shipped Semen, Frozen Semen, and Embryo Transfer.
Dr. Lisa Metcalf lectures widely on topics related to equine breeding. She currently owns a private practice that is limited to advanced equine reproduction in Sherwood, Oregon, where her time is divided between clinical practice, research and teaching. She earned her DVM from The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and her Masters Degree in Reproductive Endocrinology from the University of California at Davis. Dr. Metcalf is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists.

Equine Thermography & Rehabilitation Seminar, October 2000
James Waldsmith, DVM presented a WAVMA recognized Continuing Education Seminar on Thermography and Rehabilitation Modalities, in October 2001. Thermography offers several benefits to the equine practitioner. Because this non-invasive diagnostic tool can assess soft tissues and superficial bones, it is quite useful for early diagnosis of injuries of the tendons, ligaments, and feet, as well as the upper limbs and back. Other applications include lameness exams and assessment of saddle fit.
Dr. Waldsmith is one of the two developers of the Emerge thermography camera, a higher resolution camera sensitive enough to show 64 colorsable to pick up very subtle changes in skin temperature. Dr. Waldsmiths private practice focuses on performance horses, and he was selected as imaging specialist for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the recent Pan American Games in Winnepeg, Manitoba. After receiving his veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 1982, Waldsmith worked in mixed animal practices in Michigan and as resident veterinarian for two large Arabian breeding farms in central California. He started his own practice in 1985 and is currently owner of Edna Valley Veterinary Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, CA. His practice emphasizes sports medicine and rehabilitation, wellness maintenance, and reproduction. His presentations to groups such as AAEP, AVMA, and AESM are characterized by his engaging speaking style and strong visual materials.

Parasite Control for Horses, September 2000
Laird Laurence, DVM will present a compelling discussion of the lifecycle and treatment options for the parasites living inside your horses gut. Learn more from Dr. Laurence about these life and death issues for your equine friends. Topics will include a comparison of paste worming and daily worming programs, the role of weather in colics, signs of a small strongyle infestation, best times to deworm your horse.
